Need a good reason to eat dessert first? We have two. First, if you’re making a healthy dessert recipe like this chocolate zucchini sheet cake, there’s virtually no guilt involved. And second, science says you should.

Just a few years ago, in 2012, a study published in the Journal of Consumer Research revealed some interesting findings. It’s important for people to pay attention to the amount of unhealthy foods they eat, researchers said. But researchers also pointed out that monitoring the healthy foods you eat could be counterproductive. Considering that eating healthier at meals can help you to feel satisfied sooner, many have interpreted this study as a free license to eat dessert first and get those cravings out of the way, as long as you’re filling your plate with healthy foods later.

Another study conducted by Israeli doctors and presented at The Endocrine Society’s 94th Annual Meeting in Houston in 2012 supports this fun theory. With a focus on reducing hunger and cravings versus achieving total weight loss goals, researchers found over the course of an eight-month study that the people who ate a high-protein, carbohydrate-rich breakfast with some dessert on the side lost more weight and kept it off better than the low-carb study group.

The people who ate dessert with breakfast also reported feeling less hungry and having fewer cravings throughout the day. The research on dessert-for-breakfast is fascinating, and it’s also a great incentive to make a pan of this healthy chocolate zucchini sheet cake and have a slice (or two) for breakfast. Because science says so.
